I&#039;ve also heard it put this way - A company knows if it is strategic when it walks away from a profitable, opportunistic piece of business because it is not a good fit.  That&#039;s when it is HARD to say &quot;no.&quot; IMHO the only way a company can do this is because it knows the opportunity cost of missing the business that IS a good fit when it is distracted/occipied with business that is NOT a good strategic fit.

The application to marketing: what is the incremental cost of diluting  scarce marketing resources by investing them in lower-value strategies?</description>
